Susan and I were next door neighbors with Elijah in Huntington. I found out Elijah was sick when i contacted him to see if he could check on a water leak that had been reported at my house, since we were out of town. He said he was very weak with COVID but volunteered to go investigate the issue anyway. I had to insist more than once that he not get out of bed. That’s the type of man he was, always a sense of duty, respectful and polite! Elijah was a wonderful neighbor. Our hearts are broken over his passing!

The South Point Class of 1999 is mourning the loss of one of our own today. For over a decade we as Pointers sat with Elijah during class, smiled with him during class photos, made him mad at times, laughed with him on the playground, dreaded test days together and created so many more memories throughout those 13 years. We as Pointers learned as we lived our youth together. Many of us lost touch after our time at school ended, but when you have the privilege of growing up with someone, their memory is etched on your soul forever. We remember the childhood boy and the young man he grew to be along side us as we navigated life together. Thank you for the memories and the time you gave us Elijah.
Don’t cry because it’s over; smile because it happened. – Dr. Seuss

I first met Elijah at a bonfire in Ripley, WV, in October of 2013. He was full of angst, with dark hair and beautiful eyes. He immediately caught my eye. It would be several weeks before I saw him again, and that is a day I will never forget. I was lost, looking for the NA meeting and I saw him, his back turned toward me, and he was wearing a pink dress shirt with his hair slicked over to the side. I cannot recall how we started talking after that. He says I messaged him first, and I don't doubt it because he had intrigued me since I first saw his face in the soft glow of that campfire. He was a charming fellow. He was so intelligent. He studied different religions, history, wars, psychology, philosophy and he worked tirelessly for his recovery; he celebrated his first year clean shortly after we first met. Elijah and I could sit and talk into the wee hours of the morning. One of my most favorite memories of him is listening to the pitter patter of his feet across the floor to his automatic coffee pot on the very first morning I woke up beside him.
Over the years, I have had the opportunity to watch that young man I first met at that campfire grow up. I've watched him celebrate clean time, year after year. In fact, he would have celebrated 9 years on January 21st, this year. Just a few days from now. I watched him go through the pain of healing. I not only watched him write about his experiences, feelings, and patterns, but also learn from them. I have watched him become a dad. I have watched him take my oldest boy, Connor, and treat him as if he were his own. He helped teach Connor to climb trees, how to play Magic the Gathering, and he was working on teaching him how to play chess before he got sick.
Elijah’s youngest son, Gabe, was a spitting image of his father. You could look at every picture of the two together and feel the love between the two - and you could always see how proud and happy Elijah was to be his dad. He taught Gabe the ideals of being a man, and those ideals have already resonated with Gabe even though he is only six years old. One memorable example was when that little guy got up out of bed to come find me, sitting silently in reflection, and he whispered softly, “mamma, I was just checking on you to make sure you're okay. I'm gonna make sure the doors are locked.” This sweet boy has physically wiped the tears from my cheek and told me that daddy was sleeping, and he was dreaming of him, that it will be okay.
Lastly, Elijah Crum was an outstanding member of the community. He spent the last ten years of his life helping folks navigate the healing of their mental health, taking the time to teach his trade to folks he hired, and donating to any charity that he crossed paths with. He was the kind of man that would stand up for the underdog. He was the kind of man that would do anything for anyone in need. It may be cliche to say that he would "give the shirt off his back," but he absolutely would. He regularly did acts of service in secret, such as paying for every child in Gabe's classroom to go to the book fair, donating to make sure every child at daycare got to go on their mini field trips during summer, and so much more.
For those that did not have the pleasure of knowing him, we must let the world know what a wonderful person it will never get to meet. I cannot express all of the beautiful things Elijah Crum brought into this world. He was my very best friend and the love of my life. He is wild, he is tough, he is beautiful.

Elijah was a breath of fresh air in this life. It was the little things that made it count for him. Nights spent with him and Kristen were filled with lots of ridiculous jokes that enticed full belly laughter, dinner plates so full the meat was hanging off the edge, enough coffee to fuel an Army, but the most abundant thing found in that home was always love. The love Elijah had for his family was evident in everything he did. A true man of integrity, he was a rare gem. The love he had for his son was a love like no other. Watching the two of them wrestle and seeing the absolutely to die for hilarious videos of DinoDad and GabosaurusRex gave me something to hope my own children would find in their father. Never to judge, always willing to lend an ear, a witty “no one gives two sh**s buddy” type of guy, he was the best and will be greatly missed.
