Please share a memory of Clifford to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Gene Hughes 74 of Louisa, Kentucky passed away June 13, 2024 at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Kentucky following a long illness.

Gene was born July 31, 1949 in Louisa, the son of the late Clifford James and Faye Prince Hughes. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by two sisters Linda Swenson and Lois Derifield and a brother John Hughes.

Survivors include his loving wife Candy Hughes; children Angie Huff, Shawn (Jenny) Hughes, Nick (Stephanie) Hughes, Melanie (Ray) Granillo, Travis (Stephanie) Hughes, and Chad (Alena) Hughes; 13 grandchildren, a great grandson; three sisters Wanda Hughes, Shelia Kensinger, and Sheria Williamson; and two brothers David and Richard Hughes.

Gene was a retired supervisor for the Norfolk and Southern Railroad.

Today, we gather to honor and remember a man who meant so much to all of us: The best father and grandfather Gene Hughes . Our dad was a man of unwavering love and dedication to his family. With six children, thirteen grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, his legacy of love and care stretches far and wide. He loved us all unconditionally.

Dad was not only a master carpenter but also a great  artist. His hands could build almost anything, and his drawings were so detailed. He worked tirelessly for us, always putting his family first, and he loved us with a depth that words can scarcely convey.

One of my fondest memories is how much he loved getting his back rubbed. He would gather us children when we were young and did the same to his grandchildren…playfully challenge us with, "Let's see who can rub my back the best." It was a small, tender moment that showcased his gentle and loving nature.

Dad was also the king of dad jokes. His humor was a constant in our lives, bringing laughter and light even on the toughest days. And his passion for sports was unparalleled; he loved to keep stats and notes from NASCAR races to football games, a testament to his attention to detail and enthusiasm. He was a fan Marshall University and University of Kentucky.

Today, as we say our goodbyes, we also celebrate the life of a remarkable man who gave us so much. His love, his laughter, and his legacy will live on in each of us. Thank you, Dad, for everything. We will miss you dearly, but we will carry your memory in our hearts forever.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday June 16th at 3:00 pm at the Wilson Funeral Home with Bro. Brian Crum and Rev. Jerry Hughes officiating. Burial will follow in Yatesville Memorial Gardens. Friends may visit the family on Saturday June 15th from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Wilson Funeral Home.
