Mark Kingston, our friend for more than 55 years, arrived at Colonel Gray High School In the fall of 1968. Word of his arrival spread quickly in our small school, and it was not long before we met him. We sensed right away that he was both highly intelligent and impressively congenial. The three of us quickly became close friends, sharing the laughter that came from our attempts at golf and the many other things in life that we were not very good at. He called us Guillaume and Pierre; we called him M.B.
From the outset, Mark had firm plans for his future. He wanted to be a doctor, like his father. Not surprisingly, he took high school seriously. He excelled in academics and joined a number of organizations (the Science Club, the French Club, the Debating Club and the Colonel’s Journal newspaper); wisely, he declined membership in the notorious Pythagoras Society.
All three of us went on to attend the University of Prince Edward Island together, where we quickly encountered a harsh lesson. Presenting ourselves as a ‘triumvirate’ from Charlottetown, we entered a competition for a place on the team that would represent the university at a nationally televised quiz show. In the next humiliating two hours or so, we failed miserably at answering even one test question correctly – with the exception of Mark, of course, whose wide-ranging knowledge earned him a seat on the team and an appearance on national TV.
Reading Stephanie’s tribute to her father in her beautiful obituary, it was very evident to us that he was, to the moment that he left this earth, still the boy who came into our lives all those years ago – kind, jovial, gentle, curious, committed, and caring. That led us to a special memory that takes us back to our high school years.
During our final year of high school, the curriculum included Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, to which all three of us took a great liking. Revisiting that script this past week, we found in Antony’s great and famous eulogy words that describe Mark as we will always remember him: “His life was gentle, and the elements so mix’d in him that Nature might stand up and say to all the world, ‘This was a man!’.” Well done, M.B.

Thank you so much for sharing these memories. He loved you guys so much, and I am so glad I got to witness your close friendships, and am beyond glad that you were all able to meet up again on the Island last year, and we were all together for his birthday. Old friendships are so special, and enduring. We know that you all are here in spirit, as does he.

My deepest sympathy to Mark’s family! The Kingston & Hayward families were great friends growing up in Chatham!
I have very fond memories of our visits when they lived in Halifax & Charlottetown, also, sharing delicious meals & lots of laughs around their large dining room table!
Thinking of you all at this sad time!

My memories are few, but crystal clear, evoking cousin-hood in general, plus Mark's dislike of the mundane and his whimsical nature:
Mark and Paula in a panic about how to handle one of them pouring grease down the kitchen sink at their parents' house.
Crowding into a hotel room at some ridiculous hour to watch the Princess Diana (who cares about Charles) wedding. We had scones and clotted cream, of course.
On a visit to Kathy and me in Ottawa, he advised me not to slice my cucumber ("so boring") but to cut it in random chunks. I still cut my cucumbers in chunks.

Dr Kingston was our family Dr from 1980 to 2010. He was one of the most caring Drs that I have ever known. He took care of all 6 of my kids plus my husband and I. He treated my husband for bleeding ulcers. We couldn’t pay for the medicine at the time because our insurance wouldn’t pay for it so he would give us samples each month. He knew when one of the kids got sick that the others would catch it so he always gave us extra meds for the kids. I have never known a more compassionate man as he was. And no matter where I seen him he was always smiling and always asked about our family. I don’t think he ever forgot a patient’s name. Also he wasn’t just a dr he was our friend. We will miss him very much He is going to be a very special Angel in heaven. Prayers for Rose and Stephanie now and for the days ahead. Prayers for his family

Mark Kingston's father, also a doctor was my doctor as a child in Miramichi (formally Chatham) New Brunswick, Canada. He was my mother's cousin, Monica Kingston Vickers. There is such a profound sense of belonging to the Kingston clan. I am very sorry to hear of his passing at such a young age. My condolences to his immediate family and siblings.
