Obituary of Donovan D. Huff

Please share a memory of Donovan to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Donovan D. "Tom" Huff, 91, of Mansfield went to be with his Lord Thursday, September 18, 2014. He was the son of Donovan and Fanny (Woolum) Huff growing up in Fort Gay, WV. When recalling his childhood on Paddlecreek growing up during the depression, Tom said it was a hard life, but he always seemed to have fun, that the good times outweighed the bad. Tom went on to join the US Army and fought in the South Pacific during World War II. After the war, he returned home and married Margaret Bartram and moved to Mansfield. Tom was a building contractor who taught his son and grandsons everything he knew. Anyone who worked for him would say he was a hard man to work for because he was a perfectionist, but that is only because if they did not do it his way, it was not the right way. But Tom taught them much and they always had fun joking around and telling their "Tom Donovan" work stories. Tom was often described as hard as nails, but that was his way of teaching life experiences. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, Nascar and had an amazing garden. Even at 90 years old, Tom was a strong hard working man who re roofed his own home. In his final days, he was a proud veteran who could recall dates and battles he fought, of returning home from the war, and that being the only Christmas dinner he missed. A true patriarch of the family, tom loved family traditions and was always the first in line at Sunday dinners. He will truly be missed. Surviving him are his daughters, Joy (Ed) Tinkham and Kay (Don) Moore; son, Tommy (Betty) Huff; grandchildren, Jeremy (Martie) Tinkham, Troy (Liz) Tinkham, Julie (Billy) Eldridge, and Sarah Huff; great grandchildren, Mason, Issac, Jaxson, and Grayson; sister, Joanna Allen of West Virginia; brother, John (Doretta) Huff of South Carolina; brother-in-law, Glenn Peters; sisters-in-law, Marcella and Blondie Bartram and Garnie Huff; many nieces and nephews; and friends, Bo and Joe Seymour and Wade and Teresa Spencer. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Margaret; brothers, Elmo, Jack, and Bill Huff; and sisters, Pearl Peters and Betty Lewis. Funeral services will be held Monday, September 2, 2014 at 1:00 pm at the Wilson Funeral Home with Pastor Mack Ray Cyrus officiating. Burial will follow in the Frazier Cemetery at Fort Gay, WV. Friends may call on Sunday Sept. 21st from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Wilson Funeral Home.
