Today my memories have been awakened by reminiscing my younger days as a child in Blaine. The stories I have to tell are many but I want to highlight just a couple of the ways in which Loraine impacted my life. Since the Burtons' were the only family in Blaine with a television at that time it was an honor for my brother, Jesse, and myself to be invited every week to watch the Arthur Godfrey Show in their home. For a couple of years we walked weekly from our home to the Burtons' for the time of our lives sitting in their living room while munching on popcorn and drinking homemade apple cider. We felt so very special and loved. Week after week as the show came to a close Loraine would remind us that she would see us the next week for the variety show viewing. We would count off the days until the next week arrived for us to return to their home. My other story made a change in my life for eternity and not just for the here and now. Loraine invited me to attend church with their family one day and that one day turned into several years. The Sunday School teacher challenged her students to read the Bible. Due to those years of reading I had gained a head knowledge of God's Word. Loraine did not know at that time what God was preparing me for in the future as Harry Greenville, Buddy, she, and myself would ride in the front of the truck to church and those weeks of reading became a relationship to Christ when I gave my heart to HIM. What an example of Christ she was to me and it has come full circle as I served as a pastor's wife for years remembering the character traits Loraine had instilled in me! Loraine has not really left us but just changed her address to HEAVEN!

My grandma, Winnie Dye, is a friend of hers. She also took care of her in time of need. When I come down to visit my grandma I would go to the church in Blaine to see everyone, but every time I did I would see an inviting smile on Loraines face. I didn't know her very well because I didn't always go to church, but I can always remember that smile and I will always remember her as a caring, loving person to everyone she meets. Sorry for your loss, Loraine's Family. Loraine was also a friend to me and I will never forget her.

Buddy, I just wanted to extend my sympathy to you and your family. I will always treasure the fond memories I have of Loraine when I worked at the bank. I made a lot of trips to the store for lunch or chocolate milk or ice cream bar. She was always so kind and gentle with everyone and I will never forget her. I'm reminded of one of Harry's stories about Loraine on a fishing trip she took with him. When she got a nibble on her line, Harry told her to reel it in. The whole time she was reeling in, she was praying, "Oh, Lord! Oh, God! Amen!! She had caught a fish!
My sister told me about one Sunday morning when she was on her way to Magoffin County, Loraine was riding her wheelchair to church, but the men had to hold up traffic on either side of the bridge so she could get across the road.
She touched a lot of lives and we will never be the same for having known her.

I grew to love Loraine, as I served as her home health nurse for several years! Loraine loved everyone and shared her love for the Lord with all she met! I had Loraine on my mind and wanted to visit her then the big snow came and my plans were interrupted! I have fond memories of of Loraine that I will cherish; not only her sharing her love for our Lord but how proud she was of her family and how much she loved each of you! Every visit I made to her home, as our visit came to an end, she would tell me about each of you. I want you each one to know how much Loraine loved, cared, and prayed for you! My prayers go up for each of you! Loraine will surely be missed here on this earth but she is no longer broken physically, as she is walking with our Lord in heaven! Heaven has definitely gained a jewel beyond compare!

Such sad news. I have such wonderful childhood memories of Ms. Loraine. She knew me I guess from the time I was born. Visiting from Columbus to see grandparents and always, always, excited to stop in and visit with Ms. Loraine. She and my mom and grandmothers sure could talk. She was such a lovely, gracious lady. She was a class act in Blaine. May she find peace, love and happiness in her heaven above. Blaine was never the same after she retired.

Growing up in Blaine meant growing up going to the store and getting to see this sweet little lady. She always had a smile on her face and a memory of someone in our family to share. She always told me how pretty I was and how pretty my little mother was and how she loved her. We all loved her and she will be missed. I am sure her and Mom are catching up on old times right now..

I am so saddened to hear the news of Lorraine's passing. She was such a treasure and such a blessing to the Blaine community. I have so many memories of going into that store for pop and candy and getting Christmas presents from there. My dad would always come home with lots of candy for treats. She would extend credit for groceries for folks until they could afford to pay her back. I am sure she didn't always collect it all. I pray for peace for "Buddy" and his family and all the friends.
Much love, Cora Brickey Varvell
